Rudolphe Demougeot - Burgundy Wine School

€210.00
This is exclusive. This is exciting. For the first time since 2017 we have managed to get an allocation of our favourite Burgundy from one of the bona fide stars of Meursault: Monsior RUDOLPHE DEMOUGEOT. We are offering his Bourgogne Cote D'Or Chardonnay, known as a Baby-Meursault, and his Bourgogne Cote D'Or Pinot Noir, from the famous terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet at €35 per bottle in the 6-Pack - this represents the Irish market's best value Burgundy - the region is responsible for the concept of terroir, the foundational principle of the great wines of the modern age.

Rudolphe has spent years honing his craft as a farmer of his vineyards, deciding early in his life that the best wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. Guided by bio-dynamics, everything is obviously done by hand and the top sites are ploughed by horse. He selects clusters early in the season and prunes to focus the purity and power: quality over quantity. The white are made whole cluster, no lees stirring and a tiny bit of So2 only at bottling, with nearly all old oak. The Bourgogne Blanc knocked us out straight away, intensity matched with elegance, essentially a Meursault, it probably conveys him as a wine maker more than any of his wines - pound for pound one of the best in the region. The fruit is from an area to the South of Meursault Le Limozin, a vineyard sourrounded by the Premier Crus of Perrieres, Genevrieres & Charmes.

His reds are made in an even more hands off approach, but are also built for style and elegance and not power and heft. He fully de-stems his reds, a practice that has been advocated by some of the best Burgundian wine makers over the years, though the practice has divided opinion at times. My own opinion is that the wines from the Cote de Beaune benefit from the practice, as it adds to the region's natural silkiness and elegance. Crucially, the wine maker must REALLY know what they are doing - not a problem here. The red is from Chassagne-Montrachet, an area traditionally better known for it's whites. The wine comes from an area just to the South of the Premier Cru vineyard of Morgeot. Like the white, this punches well above its weight. It's bursting with luminous energy, it's intense and long. The epitome of a serious Bourgogne.

As I said, I do not think there is better value currently available in this market. Back the truck up and stack 'em high - it's CHRISTMAS!

Both wines are €35 per bottle in the 6-Pack and can be bought all white, all red or mixed (make sure you select the option you want from the dropdown box before you add to cart). Included with every order is our BURGUNDY WINE SCHOOL pack of notes, a comprehensive but digestible guide to the region - GET INTO IT!
