Few estates in the world have enjoyed such a meteoric rise to prominance as Tenuta di Carleone in Radda in Chianti Classico, the sunbacked basin of Tuscany, Italy. The editorial comment sourrounding this estate has at times bordered on the hysterical, but the wines and their corresponding scores speak for themselves. Now one of the most sought after producers of Tuscan Sangiovese, the project is helmed by Sean O'Callaghan, former head wine maker at Reicine. In a country and industry populated by characters, O'Callaghan is a hell of a charcter, known locally as 'il Guercio', the one eyed rascal (also the name of one of his wines).

His entry level Chianti Classico is matured in stainless steel and cement, give give absolute chrystraline purity. The vintage in question is 2021 and it is already making waves. Il Guercio 2021 has been called the masterpiece of the winery and has just scooped 95+ points from Wine Advocate, a single vineyard Sangiovese, that it comes in a Burgundy bottle tells you all you need to know. Whole bunch, matured in concrete, this is a show-stopping wine.  Uno is a more traditionally styled expression, made from only the best fruit from the best parcels that they have, there is a lick of oak on this from a short maturation in new tonneaux, then the rest in cement. It is elegant but highly complex and impossibly long, 2018 it is ready to drink but will greatly reward further cellaring time. il Randagio, pictured above is his new creation. Same wine making, but made with Cabernet Franc & Merlot, this is a kind of ultra pure Super-Tuscan. STSine
