Introducing: ‘La Vanidosa No. 2’, a Garnacha from Bodegas D. Mateos. The Vanidosa range is Mateos’ celebration of Garnacha, a delicious Spanish variety that is often overshadowed by the popular Tempranillo. La Vanidosa No. 2 is made from 100% hand-harvested Garnacha. The wine is aged in old and new French oak barrels for no more than 5 months. This minimal ageing softens the tannins of the wine while preserving the fruity characteristics. The nose has intense aromas of strawberries, raspberries and redcurrant. These fruits come through on the palate and are balanced with a slightly savoury balsamic character and a touch of spice. The wine has good acidity, so the finish is juicy and refreshing. La Vanidosa No. 2 is a great example of Garnacha’s young, fun potential. We recommend serving this wine chilled so that the red fruit flavours really pop on the palate.
DOC Rioja is a region that needs little introduction, especially to Irish wine consumers - we are the largest consumers per capita of Rioja in the WORLD! Most of what we enjoy from Rioja is based on the Tempranillo grape variety. However, there are several permitted grape varieties grown in Rioja. Garnacha is one of Spain's most widely grown varieties, but doesn't get nearly as much attention. With this month's Monopole, we wanted to let Garnacha get the spotlight! Garnacha (also known as Grenache) is a grape variety that is typically found blended with other varieties. Garnacha can withstand hot, dry climates and produces ripe wines packed with bright red fruit flavours and plums; with age it can develop a leathery and toasty character.
