Subscribing only to organic, sustainable and biodynamic vineyard practices, Hobo has one of the most exciting and wide-ranging portfolios in California, paying homage to old school Cali classic varietals. Founder Kenny Likitprakong is a pretty unique character – he’s been a quiet revolutionary and a key cog in the development of the New California movement, creating low intervention wines that eschew the overt ripeness you too often find in California. He started his career with no set winery and no vineyards in 1999, and the name “Hobo” refers to the vast travels on which his endless curiosity leads him. The flexibility to pick and choose the grape type, vineyard and appellation on an ongoing basis is his preference because of the interchanging people it brings to the picture.

The 2018 Hobo Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is intended to be approachable, consumed relatively young, and a versatile food companion. Hobo is always after a more subtle, more restrained, almost lighter style of Cabernet Sauvignon than what may be typical in California these days, but also something that is bright and characteristic of the variety. Drinking this is like stepping back in time - if you're fortunate to have tasted Californina Cabernet from the 1980's you'll understand what I mean. Lean and a little rustic like a lot of French wine, but fruit forward like the best of California. The 80's saw a still relatively young wine industry in California get to grips with their art as their vineyards and their understanding of them matured, and the Golden State set off on a Golden Age.
