Espera, Castelao 2018 (6 pack)
- Region: Portugal, Lisboa
Grapes: 100% Castelao
Espera Wines is a label established by Rodrigo Martins. Rodrigo worked as a winemaking consultant for many years for several different wineries. While many winemaking consultants exclusively concern themselves with what is happening in the winery, Rodrigo feels that great wine must start with carefully grown grapes.
When Rodrigo decided he wanted to make his own wine under his own label, he contacted a local cooperative with spare room in the cellar. He grows and manages his own small plot of vineyards and makes his wine in the cooperative. The wines showcase the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. Rodrigo uses light extraction on the red grapes, making wines that are fresh, light in body and low in alcohol.
Espera Castelão is Rodrigo's top wine of his small range. It is made from 100% Castelão, a local Portuguese variety. Ageing in French oak barrels for 12 months elevates this wine - the nose is interesting, with notes of flint and a slight sherry character due to the oak. The tannins are soft and fine, and the wine is medium-bodied. The Espera Castelão is quite unlike your typical full-bodied, high alcohol, tannic, rich Portuguese red. It is exciting to taste something so unique from the region and we are hopeful that this is part of a greater move towards fresher, lighter wines.
We only have a few cases left - we will be sad to see it go, but happy knowing that it's gone WineLab devotees!
