Queen of Bierzo: Veronica Ortega

2 x Each of the V.O. 2018, ROC 2018 & Barreda 2018 - 30% off!!

Verónica Ortega is the daughter of a famous bullfighter in Spain. Given his obsession with bullfighting, it is unsurprising that Alvaro Palacios took Veronica on as his protege. She quickly proved she had more than enough talent to vie with her mentor though and is one of the very top names in the Bierzo region now. She worked in Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Comte Armand, 2 of the most famed Burgundian producers and this really shows in her wines - Burgundian, to say the least. She captures insane minerality and vivaciousness in her Mencia, and her skill is also her hallmark. Every bit as formidable as Palacios, Perez, Guimaro et al in terms of Mencia crafting. This is a stunning 3-Pack at a knock down price which contains one wine that was made expressly FOR US!

Veronica Ortega V.O. (Version Original) 2018 is 100% Mencia from the famed Bierzo area of Valtuille, off very old vines from limestone from a small plot high up. This altitude imparts a thunderbolt of freshness, and it is super intense and structured. 95 POINTS from Spain Guru Tim Atkin MWVeronica Ortega ROC 2018 is a famous wine at this stage and this vintage has been heralded as the best expression of this wine ever scooping 96 POINTS from Luis Guttierez. This is an amazing wine, complex and concentrated. Lastly Veronica Ortega 'El Barredo' 2018 is totally exclusive to us - and this is the very last of it. From a special plot of Mencia and co-fermented some white varieties (Godello & Palomino) is was put into old barrels to mature, but then covid hit and it stayed in barrel. The extra elevage have made this a unique proposition. The whole barrel (yes only one) was sold to us. It's a new paradigm for Bierzo Mencia.

This was a surprise find in the warehouse, probably squirreled away for staff at the time we feel it is too special not to offer. Special pricing, special wine. STSWine
