2021 Domaine Barou 'Petit Colorado' Syrah (6 bottle case)

ABOUT THE WINE

When we first tasted Domaine Barou’s ‘Petit Colorado’, a 100% Syrah from a small site in the Northern Rhône, our first tasting note was ‘baby Saint-Joseph’. For French wine obsessives, you’ll recognise Saint-Joseph as one of the Rhône’s top AOCs. ‘Petit Colorado’ is from Charnas, and qualifies as ‘IGP des Collines Rhodaniennes’. This is Saint-Joseph’s young, cool, and upcoming little brother. It shares the best of what the big brother has to offer while being effortlessly proud of what makes it different. The vines are planted in light and stony granite soils, which lend a minerality and freshness to the wine, so you avoid the cloying jamminess that is sometimes found in poor examples of Syrah. The wine is briefly aged in stainless steel tanks to better showcase the intriguing dark fruit characteristics typical of Syrah.

ABOUT THE REGION

ABOUT THE REGION

Domaine Barou is based in the Northern Rhône. While many wine drinkers are quite familiar with the likes of the full, ripe and generous Southern Rhône wines, there is less familiarity with the North. The Northern Rhône is distinctly cooler, influenced by the mistral wind from the Massif Central mountain range. In the North, the only permitted red variety is Syrah, so the region is a real celebration of the variety. The cooling influence mean that
the wines retain greater acidity, while the hot summers ensure that the grapes still ripen well. Historically, the wines of the Northern Rhône are characterised by their inky intensity and ageworthiness. More recently, wineries such as Domaine Barou are showcasing the young, fresh style possibilities from Syrah by focusing on the influence of the soils, retaining some stems during fermentation, and using stainless steel and other inert vessels for ageing before release.
