2018 'El Barredo', Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon
From the cellars of Veronica Ortega, one of the top winemakers in Spain, El Barredo is our most successful Monopole offer to date. It sold out within two hours of going live and is a stand-out bottle. El Barredo is a unique offering to WineLab – we even designed the labels ourselves, so you won’t find this bottle anywhere else.
Intrigued? Just wait until you hear about the wine itself:
Veronica Ortega had identified a special block called ‘El Barredo’ in one of her vineyards in Villabuena, Bierzo a few years ago. This block is higher than the rest of the vineyard and has more slate in the soil – these two factors contribute additional freshness and structure. It also had a much older clone of the local Mencía grape and was interplanted, as most of these ancient vineyards are, with a couple vines of Dona Blanca, Palomino and Godello. She was farming biodynamically, and the fruit was amazing. Due to the uniqueness of this block, she had separated the 2018 vintage. It underwent a very gentle winemaking process, was put into older oak barrels to mature and the wine was ageing beautifully. With the arrival of COVID everything stopped. All of her export markets closed as everything shut down. This wasn’t the time to introduce a new project, and the wine just kept ageing.
Fast forward to early 2021 and the inception of Monopole. The wine had now spent two years in oak barrels and was absolutely stunning, but Veronica was not sure what to do with it. If Veronica says the wine is stunning, you listen – she has the one of the most impressive winemaking CVs and makes wines that are hauntingly beautiful. Veronica's single vineyard wines "Roc", "Cobrana", and "Version Original" are firm favourites here but ordinarily command a shelf price of €40-45. We are going to deliver this wine for half of that.
